Top 25 Music Videos of 2016 (#25-#21)

We can be honest with ourselves. Even though 2016 wasn't the most thrilling year for music in general, with the exception of just a handful of pristine album releases, there was thankfully no shortage of creativity and color that poured out of the music videos that accompanied many of the songs unleashed by our favorite artists. Whether the visuals highlighted the immense talent of independent artists, the fierceness of RuPaul's Drag Race contestants, or the return of our beloved pop goddesses, they all were just memorable enough to trigger memories a year down the road.

The artists and the work represented on this extremely important, often referenced list (please, note obvious sarcasm) are being singled out for a particular track's accompanying music video only. The quality of the song itself, chart placement or parent album were not taken into consideration. Those qualifications will be complied into lists still to come. Enjoy!

#25. "Read U, Wrote U" by the Top 4 finalists of RuPaul's Drag Race: All-Stars 2

Starting this unnecessary year-end list off with a cheat. The final stage performance from Alaska Thunderfuck 5000, Detox, Katya and Roxxxy Andrews on the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All-Stars may not embody the true definition of an official music video, but "Read U, Wrote U" could easily double as one and easily surpass other releases of 2016. Chair choreography, hair-flipping, insane aerial splits and shirtless men made for a show-stopping four minutes of television "herstory" that highlighted the creativity, uniqueness, nerve and talent of these drag superstars and impressed the legendary RuPaul herself.

#24. "Don't Wanna Know" by Maroon 5

The year 2016 could be remembered for the Pokemon GO craze that swept the world in the summer... for a couple of months at least. Maroon 5 capitalized on that virtual frenzy for their music video in support of "Don't Wanna Know", while adding cameo appearances from Sarah Silverman, Vince Vaughn and Ed Helms. Running away from devoted players while going through their daily routines leads to the capture of a few adorable roly polys, but in the end, the day just caps off with an out of control party and doubt in how Adam Levine's character is really living out his life.

#23. "Desire" by Years & Years and Tove Lo

Imagery in a few scenes may be too difficult to interpret, and the absence of featured guest Tove Lo may have been missed opportunity, but the second accompanying visual for "Desire" by Years & Years embraced lead singer Olly Alexander's true identity. As Alexander is unknowingly kidnapped, presented to a strange deity in order to loosen his inhibitions and give it to an ultimate desire. This brings the artist to an underground love session where bodies connect, limitations on sexuality are thrown out the window and intense pleasure is the ultimate goal. Looks like a good time.

#22. "Slumber Party" by Britney Spears and Tinashe

Given the disaster of "Make Me (Ooh)", there was no other way Britney Spears could go with her second official Glory visual than up. However, no one really expected the Princess of Pop to release one of her best music videos to date when she called on Tinashe for a "Slumber Party" remix. Drenched in stunning shades of neon pink and blue, hitting every mark in a fun choreographed routine, and turning up the sex appeal with her gorgeous male co-star, Spears looked relaxed and in her comfort zone. Ultimately, the artist created an environment anyone would want to host a slumber party in.

#21. "Welcome to the Show" by Adam Lambert and Laleh

The release of "Welcome to the Show" by Adam Lambert and Laleh in 2016 was a pleasant surprise, but as was the accompanying, simplistic music video. Instead of the edginess of "For Your Entertainment", the theatrics of "If I Had You" or the storyline of "Another Lonely Night", we are treated to the unveiling of the glam rocker's insecurities as the up, close and personal camera shots get a glimpse at vulnerability and how he deals with constant mixed emotion. Throw in the chemistry with Laleh (even though they don't ever share the screen together), impeccable hair and fashion style, and a shirtless shot, and you have a winner.
