Selena Gomez' "The Heart Wants What It Wants" - Single Review

This came out of nowhere now didn't it?... but we are not complaining!

While rumors over the past few weeks have pointed towards a greatest hits collection from Hollywood Records artist Selena Gomez in order to move on to a new deal with Interscope, the "Come & Get It" singer has unexpectedly dropped the recently announced project's lead single. The heartbreaking "The Heart Wants What It Wants", a slightly R&B leaning ballad of a broken love, is a must hear.

Instead of an uptempo dance/pop jam in vein of her previous releases such as "Slow Down" or "Love You Like a Love Song", Gomez has decided to pull back the covers of one of the most talked about relationships in showbiz, her on-again/off-again romance with Justin Beiber.

The new track is a departure from the sound we are used to hearing from the artist as she sings of a troubled relationship she just can't seem to let go of. "Save your advice cuz I won't hear, you might be right, but I don't care, there's a million reasons why I should give you up, but the heart wants what it wants," she tearfully sings.

Along with the official track, Gomez has also dropped the gloomy, somber, black and white music video which puts a spotlight on the emotional turmoil the artist seems to be in. During the opening seconds of "The Heart Wants What It Wants", the artist is heard on the verge of tears as she talks about being stupid and crazy for loving someone who may not be the best for her. Grab some tissues, it doesn't get much better.

As she appears to walk through a typical day in her busy life, experiencing some downtime with her friends, scenes of Gomez crying in front of the camera and dealing with her loser boyfriend are shown. Despite the arguments and tears, the artist seems to focus on the good times in the video for "The Heart Wants What It Wants", until she's had enough to walk out on it all.

It may just be off a greatest hits album, set to be released later this year, but the new single is a positive, acclaimed direction for her music career. The emotion, the storytelling, the vocal performance, it's all spot on for Miss Gomez.
