Justin Bieber gets Class A ham radio license

The Neue Westfälische reports 13-year-old Justin Bieber DJ5KM is one of Germay's youngest radio amateurs

Justin, no connection with a singer of the same name, lives in Bielefeld 350 km west of Berlin. He celebrated his 13th birthday on June 20.
Just five days earlier while aged 12, he passed the exam for the Federal Network Agency Class A license. His previous Class E callsign was DO2JUS which permitted 10 watts on 144/430 MHz.

During his interview with the news reporter Justin worked GB2IWM the Duxford Radio Society station at the Imperial War Museum and G1TDN in Kingston Upon Hull but unfortnately the published callsigns were mangled.

Justin also worked Walter Randolph G0KCC who gave his location as "near Southampton" (Poole). When Justin told him his age and said that he had just passed his Class A exam Walter said "Congratulations, we need more young people to join us." Walter is 78 years old.

Justin pointed out to the reporter that amateur radio can save lives after a disaster were the existing infrastructure has failed. It can also provide an important means of communication in areas like the South Pole. The German Antarctic research station Neumayer III has an amateur radio station and Justin intends to talk to a radio amateur he knows there Marcus Heger DL1MH.
